5 Minutes of your time - University Project Part 2

Mon Mar 2, 2009, 6:00 AM
You may remember back in November that I posted a journal entry asking for feedback and opinions on a photographer’s assistant application that I am developing for the iPhone. Firstly let me thank everyone who contributed to this and apologise for not getting back to you all sooner.

This second wave of feedback that I am now gathering concerns the design of the application (user interface) and some prototype tools. Again it will only take a few minutes of your time and I would really appreciate your input.

Firstly, the link below shows 5 interface designs that I have created. For each could you give a scoring out of 10 and any relevant critique, good or bad.

Secondly, here are links to three of the tools I have created. Note the design is basic, but they are fully functional (I hope!). Again, if you could give each off these a scoring out of 10 and any relevant critique, good or bad.

Sunrise / Sunset Calculator
Calculates the time of sunrise and sunset and its bearing. (DST stands for daylight saving time).
[link]

Depth of Field Calculator
Calculates depth of field and hyperfocal distance. (NAN will display in output fields until all input fields are completed).
[link]

ND Filter Calculator
Enter your current aperture/shutter speed and it will calculate the necessary exposure adjustment for the filter selected.

I know that testing these tools on a computer is unrealistic of the final product, as ultimately they would be running on a portable device such as an iPhone, but I would still appreciate feedback. Anyone with an iPhone / iPod interested in running them on their devices as a form of beta testing, let me know and I can contact you individually letting you know how you can do this.

Thanks for your time,

Allan

"Mad? We're all mad here!" :psychotic: :juggle:
I think I would find the top 4 useful!

• Depth of Field Calculator (including hyperfocal distance)

• Sunrise / Sunset Calculator (including bearing)

• Filter Calculator – depending on the filter you apply, this would tell you what adjustments would need to be made to the camera. The classic case being a neutral density filter and exposure adjustments.

• Star trail tool – it would use your position to tell you the area of the sky where the pole star is for both the northern and southern hemisphere. Additionally it would tell you the length of star trails depending on your bearing, exposure time and lens focal length.

Mainly the filter calculator... great ideas!
